01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set slightly apart from the bustling heart of Arashiyama, musubi-cafe is a relaxed cafe where meals are conceived by a registered dietitian using local ingredients. The lunchtime lineup accommodates a range of preferences, featuring everything from vegan dishes to meat-based fare. Highlights include tender steamed chicken dressed in a savory red onion sauce, as well as a gently spiced chickpea and tomato curry—both hearty yet light on the palate. Accompanied by brown rice, substantial miso soup, homemade nukazuke pickles, and small side dishes, each plate offers a thoughtfully layered balance of flavors.

For dessert or afternoon tea, diners can enjoy cakes crafted from Kyoto tofu without dairy, eggs, or refined white sugar. The Kyoto tofu cake pairs a rice-flour cocoa sponge with a soy-milk vanilla ice cream filling, smoothly carrying accents such as Uji matcha or chocolate. Baked seasonal treats have also earned a following, from an aromatic Japanese chestnut crumble tart spiced with cinnamon and topped with plump chestnuts to a fig and nut tart.

The drinks list is equally varied, ranging from homemade lemon squash made purely with domestic lemons and beet sugar to Uji matcha soy milk and amazake smoothies blended with rice koji. Within the calm, unhurried space, it offers a soothing environment to rest after exploring the area while savoring nourishing food and drinks that highlight the natural qualities of their ingredients.
